Learning God's patience through life's difficulties

Quotes on Patience

"I'm a devotee of the old M*A*S*H reruns on television. If you've watched the show, you're familiar with the character Radar O'Reilly.

He's called Radar because he senses events before others have become aware of them. As a frontline hospital unit in the Korean conflict, the doctors of M*A*S*H received many of their wounded patients via helicopter. In the middle of all sorts of activities and noises, Radar would say, "Oh, oh. We've got wounded."
Everybody would pause, listening for distant helicopters, and somebody would say, "I don't hear anything."
To which Radar would respond, "Wait for it." And he was always right.
You say that you want patience? You can have it. Patience is only a matter of time. Wait for it."

~ Michael LeFan, Patience, My Foot!

“Take your needle, my child, and work at your pattern; it will come out a rose by and by.” Life is like that; one stitch at a time taken patiently, and the pattern will come out all right like embroidery.

           ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809–1894)

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

                                ~ Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)

This must be history's most impatient generation. Nations are concerned about economic woes, impatiently seeking quick fixes. "Little" wars rage, demonstrating humanity's terrible ill-temper when it comes to solving regional and national disputes. There is concern over the environment and energy resources. There's a sense of panic in practically every news story from Washington to Timbuktu. How can we possibly live in patient trust like "a tree planted by the waters"?
"That's okay for people with ordinary problems, but I'm overloaded with major troubles I can't do anything about and I need answers right now."
Isn't that our state of mind?
But the psalmist says, "Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall" (Psalms 55:22).

~ Michael LeFan, Patience, My Foot!

“Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself.”

~ St. Francis de Sales (1567–1622)                     French bishop and writer

"So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised."

                           ~ Hebrews 10:35, 36 (NIV)

“God engineers our circumstances as he did those of his Son; all we have to do is to follow where he places us. The majority of us are busy trying to place ourselves. God alters things while we wait for him.”

                 ~ Oswald Chambers (1874–1917)

“God isn't joking when he says to trust Him.  He's not like Lucy in the Peanuts comic strip, perennially coaxing Charlie Brown into kicking the football one more time—then at the last second yanking it away and taunting "Gotcha!" The apostle Paul knew the meaning of distress and hardship, but he said "If God is for us, who is against us?" Paul was certain that he had committed the ebb and flow of his life to the all-powerful and loving God.”

~ Michael LeFan, Patience, My Foot!

"Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has
promised to those who love him."

                                              -- James 1:12

“A handful of patience is worth more than a bushel of brains “

                                          — Dutch Proverb

“Our patience will achieve more than our force.“

                   — Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797)

“It is very strange that the years teach us patience -- that the shorter our time, the greater our capacity for waiting.”

               — Elizabeth Taylor (1932 - 2010 ),
